After years of living cut off from their back yard with a dispersed kitchen layout, these clients were ready to make some big changes. We consolidated their kitchen to an open galley with an enormous island to facilitate cooking, socializing, and homework space for three kids. Flipping bath and mudroom spaces created opportunity for a window-wrapped corner and French door to the deck and yard. This bright and open corner showcased their vintage chrome and formica table, one of many eclectic and colorful elements indicating their artistic sensibilities. Through-house views reveal a spectacular trumpet vine previously hidden by a basement head house. A thickened wall at the new Full Bath makes space for a Mudroom with storage benches, cubbies, and hooks.
Reclaimed heart pine planks unify the space wrapping from floor up the wall and along the beam. Custom pantry cabinet glass doors with inlay echoes a beloved retro hutch. Artisan glazed tile backsplash brings warmth, color, and resonance with the numerous curated objects throughout. The island and pantry are topped with reclaimed cherry in counterpoint to the deep black soapstone counters in the cooking area.
